What's Behind Our Logo?
 

Have you noticed the curious geometric symbol in our logo? There’s a fascinating story behind it.

The symbol represents the work of Leonardo Fibonacci, a 13th century mathematician born in Pisa, Italy. Fibonacci wrote a number of important texts that have played a role in reviving ancient mathematical skills. His text Liber Abaci led to the introduction of the Fibonacci sequence for which he is best remembered. The resulting number sequence, (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55…) in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers, appears in many different areas of math and science.

In our logo, the spiral contained within the rectangle is a geometric calculation of Fibonacci’s number sequence. The sequence spirals outward to infinity, and has for all time.

The Fibonacci spiral is present everywhere in nature. It can be found in the solar system; in the shapes of waves and sea shells; in the number of seeds, petals, leaves and stems in flowers and plants; in the patterns of fruits and vegetables; even in the design of the human hand! One of the most dramatic spirals can be seen in fossilized Ammonites that have resurfaced after 30 to 70 million years.
